Breakfast at Hotel. Optional Galle, the southern capital (116 km. from Colombo) was the seaport of Sri Lanka before the Colombo Port was developed. Galle is a whole different culture and atmosphere and includes some of the country's best sea bathing - Unawatuna Bay. The main attraction of Galle is the Fort that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1619 and subsequently expanded and developed by the Dutch and the British, the one time colonial masters of the Island. Apart from its Dutch fort, Galle is also famous for lace making, ebony carving and gem polishing. Unawatuna Bay, a wide arc of calm aquamarine south of Galle offers quite a choice in places to stay and eat out. The beach has been acclaimed amongst 12 best beaches in the world. The Madu River Lagoon is popularly known as the Madu Ganga. The town of Balapitiya which lies about 80km from Colombo is the waters-meet for the Madu Ganga. It is located in southwest Sri Lanka. The “Amarapura Nikaya” a Buddhist sect, held its first higher ordination ceremony balanced on a fleet of boats that were anchored, in 1803.
